Contour Golf Design Group believes in a hands-on approach to golf course design; we are convinced that a truly successful result can only be achieved when the architect commits himself to each project. Building on time and on budget relies on the quality of preparation during the design process, before construction begins. Success is achieved by listening to the needs of our clients; we work closely with the client’s other consultants, resolving any issues related to the design and construction of the course before construction begins. We then fine-tune the final design during construction to get the very best result.
At Contour Golf Design Group, we believe in a team approach to all aspects of a project, from the concept design stage right through to construction and the course opening. The true sign of a successful project is when everyone involved, from the contractors to the lead designers and the client, are proud of the end result and can celebrate this together.

Ben Davey is Director of Contour Golf Design Group. Raised in Melbourne, Ben learnt to play golf on the internationally-famous Melbourne Sandbelt. He is a long term member of Royal Melbourne Golf Club, where he has played to a single figure handicap.
In 1996, Ben joined Melbourne-based Cashmore Golf Design, where he gained significant experience working with Tony Cashmore on courses including 13th Beach Golf Links on the Bellarine Peninsula, the Henley Course at Heritage Golf Club and the Dunes Golf Links on the Mornington Peninsula. As Senior Designer at Cashmore Golf, Ben went on to play a major role in the company’s expansion into Korea, Vietnam and China.
In early 2009, Ben Davey set up Davey Shearer Golf Design. While working on Australian golf courses, such as Rottnest Island Golf Course in WA and Mildura Golf Course in Victoria, Davey Shearer also targeted the golf market in China. With Ben as the lead Golf Course Architect and former pro-golfer Bob Shearer as Design Consultant, Davey Shearer successfully completed five golf courses across China over seven years – more than any other Australian golf course architecture company during that time.
Following on from this success, Contour Golf Design Group evolved in 2016. With current clients across the country in Victoria, WA, ACT, NSW and Tasmania as well as overseas, Contour Golf Design Group draws upon the skills of international shaping, construction and irrigation professionals, who have worked with Ben during his 20+ years in the golfing industry.
Ben has a Bachelor of Science (Geological and Earth Sciences) and Graduate Diplomas in Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture, all from the University of Melbourne. Ben is a full member of the Society of Australian Golf Course Architects and for the past ten years, he has been co-editor of the Society’s annual journal, Golf Architecture.
A key support to the success of Contour Golf Design Group in China lies with our Asia Business Manager, Joseph Shi. Joseph has more than 20 years experience working in the golf design industry in China. Joseph has worked with several other designers, including Australian former pro-golfers Peter Thomson and Greg Norman. Joseph has been invested in the design and construction of more than 20 golf courses in China; he has been involved in golf in China since its introduction to that country in the early 1990s. Joseph has worked with Director, Ben Davey since 2005.
